Cedar Grove
The Township of Cedar Grove will hold a Sept. 11 memorial service on the front steps of Town Hall at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11.
Verona
The Township of Verona is holding a memorial vigil at the 9/11 Memorial at the Civic Center. The vigil is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11. An interfaith service at Our Lady of the Lake Church will follow at 7:30 p.m.
Essex County
Essex County will mark the seventh anniversary of the tragedies in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11, at its Eagle Rock Reservation memorial. A string quartet will perform from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

500+ compete in 5k run
The runners spanned Lakeside Avenue, waiting for the signal.
They were young and old, male and female, standing under a Verona Fire Department's extended ladder, which served as a starting line.
Then Essex Running Club member Tom Kelly yelled into his bullhorn, the official red pace car accelerated south on Lakeside and 503 racers began the 26th Verona Labor Day 5k Classic. The 1,006 shoes hitting the pavement were loud enough to sound like a drum roll. story continues here.



Send in the mediator
Collective bargaining negotiations between the Cedar Grove Board of Education and the local teacher's union have hit an impasse, according to statements released by both groups.
Now, the school board and the Cedar Grove Education Association are asking for a state mediator to enter the bargaining arena and lend a hand.
For local parents, this means that their children's teachers will begin the new school year without contracts for 2008-09. The previous teachers' contract expired on June 30. story continues here.

A neck brace costs $8.95. To immoblize someone's head, that's $9.25. The backboard for transporting patients is $128. The costs add up when the Verona Rescue Squad responds to 911 calls; last year, VRS averaged $115 per response, President Sue DeWitt said.
