(by Margot Hojell - October 30, 2008)
Cedar Grove had a decrease in the crime rate index from 2006 to 2007, said Cedar Grove Capt. Richard Vanderstreet. Verona’s index increased, said Verona Police Chief Douglas Huber.
According to the latest New Jersey Municipal-County Defense and Demographic Data, here’s how the two towns fared.
Cedar Grove
According to the report, Cedar Grove’s Crime Index Total dropped from 219 in 2006 to 178 in 2007.
The number of violent crimes was eight, the same as 2007. The number of non-violent crimes was 211, higher again than the number in 2007, which was 170.

There were 36 burglaries in Cedar Grove; that amounted to a higher number in 2006 than 2007, which was 27, the report said. The larceny went down from 2006 to 2007, in 2006 there was 168, and in 2007 there was 137. There was one more motor vehicle theft in 2006, seven, then in 2007, which was six. Although the crime rate is down in Cedar Grove in 2007 as compared to 2006, “officers realize the need to remain vigilant and we continue to practice a pro-active approach to policing,” Vanderstreet said. “[We] encourage residents to report any suspicious activity as it occurs. All such reports are investigated.”
